What is the difference between speech and language?
No one can explain this difference better than the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA).
why does my child need speech language therapy?
Your child may need speech language therapy for weaknesses in any of the areas of speech or language. Sometimes it may be a mild delay, which can be addressed through the school's Speech Improvement Program. If the speech or language delay impacts a student's ability to be successful academically, an Individualized Education Plan may be developed to address those areas.
How does speech language therapy work?
The answer to this question highly depends on the speech or language weakness that is involved, as well as the severity of the delay or disorder. Due to the flexibility within our elementary school, I have the opportunity to provide whole-class instruction in grades 2-5 once per six-day cycle for thirty minutes. This provides an opportunity for carryover of targeted skills from the therapy room to the general education setting. In addition, students requiring speech language therapy are seen in small groups or individually within the therapy room. This allows for more intense, focused practice of targeted skills.
